Interview Q&A
How long have you been in business?
We purchased The Mill House Inn in July of 1999- more than 12 years ago!
What is your primary product or service?
The Mill House Inn is a luxury Bed & Breakfast providing fine lodging & hospitality in the historic village of East Hampton, NY.
How did you first become interested in your line of business? (if owner) - What is your background? (If owner or store manager)
My husband, Gary, had been a chef and restaurateur for most of his life when we met (at the bar at the Memory Motel in Montauk!) At the time we were commuting between our weekend home in Montauk and Jersey City - stretching the weekends as long as possible with our laptops. We really wanted to figure out a way to make a living in a place we wanted to be. Gary had always wanted to own an inn, and I had stayed in some of the best small hotels in Europe both as a child (my grandparents were art history professors at Smith College and taught summer courses in Florence and Venice) and as an adult (in the international television business), so I had some idea of what it should be. We started looking in Vermont and the Adirondacks, but then The Mill House Inn in East Hampton Village came on the market. Right where we really wanted to be...
How do you differentiate yourself from other businesses in your category and area?
Our beautiful rooms, spectacular child & dog-friendly suites, the best breakfast in the Hamptons and our dedicated professional staff have received rave reviews. Zagat’s proclaimed The Mill House Inn one of the “Top 50 Small Hotels” in the US. Travel & Leisure featured us as “Inn of the Month.” New York Magazine rated us one of the “Top 10 Inns in the Hamptons” and American Historic Inns chose us as one of the “10 Most Romantic Inns.” The readers of Dan's Papers have voted The Mill House Inn "Best of The Best in the Hampton's." The Best Bed & Breakfast, Best Inn and Best Hotel!!
How many locations do you have and do you have plans to expand?
Just the one, at least for the time being. But you never know...
Provide detailed directions to your location
Take Route 495 East to Exit 70, Route 111 to Manorville/Eastport. At the end of the ramp turn right on 111 and follow to the end (approx. 5 miles) to Route 27 East. After you cross the Shinnecock Canal, Route 27 will narrow when you reach Southampton. From this point you still have about 20 miles to East Hampton. Stay on Route 27/Montauk Highway East. It will take a left turn in Southampton at the Princess Diner. Then you will go through Watermill, which has a big windmill. THIS IS NOT OUR WINDMILL!!! YOU STILL HAVE ANOTHER 10 MILES TO GO!!! The second time Route 27 takes a left turn (it is well marked) you will be in East Hampton. There is a beautiful swan pond directly in front of you. Take this left and proceed through the village. Go through the traffic light at Newtown Lane and immediately thereafter get into the Left Hand Turn Lane. This will put you onto North Main Street bearing left around our Windmill.
The Mill House Inn is directly across the street from this windmill. It has many white French Doors opening out from our front porch to the street. The driveway is just past the house and parking is around back. A wooden walkway will lead you from the parking lot to our front porch. You enter the inn from the porch.
