What is your primary product or service?
We have 6 different levels of tanning plus we also have sunless spray tanning.
How did you first become interested in your line of business? (if owner) - What is your background? (If owner or store manager)
Tanning came into my life about eleven years ago when I decided to tan for my junior prom. A new tanning salon opened up around the corner from my house so I decided to give it a whirl….. one session and I was hooked. I continued to tan even after my prom because it made me look and feel great. I eventually became a preferred customer which then led me to inquire about a job there. I started working at the salon when I was seventeen and have never left. I loved my job so much that I was always the employee that came early, stayed late, and so forth. I even started thinking of how I could improve store results with different specials and price lists and on my days off I would create them at home. I eventually became the manager of the salon and took care of hiring, firing, lotion supplies, specials, bulb replacement etc…..I was deeply involved and loved every minute of it. I went away to college for my degree in elementary education and psychology and came home on the weekends to manage the store. I graduated college with honors and I began pursuing my post graduate degree in literacy. I also started looking for a teaching job, but had no luck. I was struggling. My boss at the tanning salon decided he was going to open a second salon a few towns over, which meant that I was really the one in charge now. I kept dreaming that this salon could be mine, but never thought it would ever be possible. I mentioned this to my boss occasionally, but he never took me seriously; that is until one day he said, “If I ever sold this business I would only sell it to you. I know how much you love this store and would take good care of it.” After having my parents take out a second mortgage on their home and cleaning out all of my life savings….. Here I am…. Sunset Beach Tanning.
How do you differentiate yourself from other businesses in your category and area?
I was a proud and nervous business owner at twenty four years old. I had great ideas which I’d been sitting on for over 7 years and I knew what had to be done. I didn’t waste any time; I started renovating. I put up new molding, doors, front desk, a lotion display case, T max system, 5 new beds, spray tanning machine, new decorations, fresh paint, and bought new furniture. I did it all. This took me about two and a half years to do and I am still not finished. Every year I try to add more, and push the store in new directions. When I took over I immediately implemented weekly and monthly specials and extended my hours. This is one of my keys to success. I knew what the customers wanted and needed so it got done. We have four weekly specials for our customers to take advantage of and every month there is a new special. I think that my educational background of psychology and teaching skills has helped me be very creative with my specials so that none of my area competition offers what I do with my specials. The extended hours has also helped to make us more accessible and convenient for our customers and their lifestyles. I have doubled the clientele base since I took over and am still actively looking every day for something new to do for the store. My workers have been with me for years and care about the business just as much as I do. We are meticulously clean and understand how important customer service is. In fact, we have won a few awards along the way. We were nationally recognized as one of the Top Tanning Salons in the United States, Long Island’s Most Popular Business, #1 Best Tanning Salon on Long Island, Runner Up of Hottest Tanning Salon, and also Top Merchant. These awards are such a HUGE HONOR and we are very excited.
How many locations do you have and do you have plans to expand?
We only have one location and we will not be expanding. I am a very hands-on owner and perfection is key, so there is no time to expand to another location.

We are in between the LIE and Sunrise Hwy off of route 101 (Patchogue Yaphank Road). We are located in the Sunshine Sq Shopping Center in Medford NY.
